Aileen Watkins


Team Leader - Learning & Development

Aileen is a qualified primary school teacher and joined Stramash from the award winning Grounds for Learning organisation where she was their Training & Development Coordinator. Aileen brings a great depth of knowledge and experience in outdoor learning to Stramash. She has developed outdoor learning CPD programmes for teachers and educators, and has worked with children and young people in a range of outdoor settings.

I have worked as an outdoor instructor on the west coast of Scotland for several years, and absolutely love the natural beauty and adventurous opportunities it has to offer. After completing my apprenticeship though Stramash gaining a SVQ Level 3, I can’t think of a better opportunity to give the children than learning through outdoors. Stramash have given me a range of amazing opportunities such as being able to go canoeing and getting my Archery teaching certificate. I enjoy going for walks with my dogs and spending time with my family during my spare time.  I’m looking forward to my Camp America experience in the summer of 2017 and bringing home some more outdoor learning skills to support my work within the nursery.

I have been fortunate enough to be able to incorporate my love for the outdoors with my work in the Early Years. As well as achieving a BA in Childhood Practice I am a Level 3 Forest School Leader.

After 3 years of experience as an outdoor activity instructor working with older children, I am really enthusiastic about learning to work with nursery age children at stramash. I have a degree in environmental management and a love of everything nature related, and in my spare time I like to go out walking and exploring the hills whenever I can.

Outdoor Practitioner - Oban

Heather began her working life as an animal carer at the St. Andrews and then Oban Sea Life Centres. When Heather became a mum she took up child minding and then after gaining her SVQ 3 in Child Care and Education moved on to work as an Additional Support Needs Assistant in a local primary school. When not at work Heather runs a Beaver Scout group and enjoys singing with Oban Gaelic Choir. She says she feels really lucky to be working at Stramash with our pre-fives where she can combine her enthusiasm for outdoors while encouraging learning.

Jamie is a dedicated outdoor professional, with a wealth of experience of guiding, coaching and instructing in a variety of adventure sports. Jamie enjoys working with children of all ages, and loves to share his passion for the outdoors with others. He has qualifications in mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, rafting and snowboarding.

Kate’s background is in Hotel Management before moving on to being a child minder for 13 years while her family were growing up. Kate loves being outdoors and is a keen orienteer so jumped at the chance to join Stramash when the opportunity came up. Kate is enthusiastic about working with young children, and loves to teach in the outdoors as this enables the children to experience and learn about nature in a safe, happy environment. Kate also believes the Oban Team has the best “office view” in Argyll.

Katy Frew

Outdoor Practitioner - Oban

Katy has a BSc (hons) in Animal Biology and a MSc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation. After completing her degrees she spent a few years volunteering for the RSPB as a Volunteer Information and Education Assistant. She then gained a job as the Apprentice at “Wild Things! Environmental Education in Action” in Morray where she obtained a wide knowledge of outdoor education before moving to Oban and starting work with Stramash.

Senior Outdoor Practitioner - Fort William

Lindsay has worked in the outdoors for a number of years as a Countryside Ranger and firmly believes that the outdoors offers fantastic opportunities for learning and development for young people. Lindsay has always been interested in wildlife since a young age and has fond memories of being in a ‘Young Naturalist’s’ club. She brings a range of experience and knowledge through her time as a ranger and peat project officer and enjoys inspiring others about the natural world around them.

Elisabeth has extensive outdoor education experience gained through a number of teaching and instructional positions. She is passionate about facilitating outdoor experiences and engaging children with fantastic landscapes, whether it is on water or land. She is an experienced sea kayaker and regularly instructs paddling trips around the West Coast of Scotland.

Vicki Last

A marine biologist at heart and by training, Vicki finally came to the realisation that the insatiable thirst for knowledge of young children and their constant questioning of the world around them poses a far more rewarding educational cohort to work with than do academics (albeit with a whole different suite of challenges). She started working as a practitioner with Stramash in 2015 and has revelled in the opportunity to encourage the children to enjoy and explore the outdoor environment.
